What information should I get from my employer?

You should receive a written contract in your first language and English before your first day. It must include:

  • Who your employer is
  • Where you’ll work
  • Your hours (at least 32 hours/week if you’re on a Seasonal Worker visa)
  • Your pay

Each time you’re paid, you must also receive a payslip showing:

  • Hours worked
  • Pay before and after deductions
  • Legal deductions like tax or national insurance
  • Agreed deductions (like housing, if you signed for it)
  • The net pay (amount you actually receive)

What should I do if I’m being treated unfairly or discriminated against?

It’s illegal for employers in Scotland to discriminate against workers based on your race, sex, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected characteristics.

It’s also illegal to give worse pay or conditions to someone based on visa status, or if they work part-time or temporarily.

What should I keep track of while I work?

It’s useful to keep a simple record of:

  • Hours worked (start/end times, breaks, type of work, location)
  • Expected vs. actual pay (hourly rate or piece rate, payslips, money received)
  • Your contract and any agreements (including housing or deductions)
  • The address of where you work

These notes can really help if problems come up later.

What are the signs of human trafficking or exploitation?

Warning signs include:

  • False promises about the job
  • Violence, threats, or insults
  • Being forced to work long hours
  • Poor or unsafe working/living conditions
  • Not being allowed to leave
  • Passport or ID taken from you
  • Wages withheld or deductions that trap you in debt
